Yes, the destination VM should use hardware version 6 or above.

You can copy and execute vmware-sysinfo-lin32 on live Linux, attempt to start script and check what the error is.Also check the kernel version - could not be compatible, see manual.

There is combo box with hardware selection in Converter Wizard. If you ise Workstation as destination, choose more recent version. HTH
