Hi All,

While converting a Server 2003 server to an ESXi 6.0.0 server I received this message after 96% Complete.

(FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.)

I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.1.1

Anyone run into to this problem and find a solution?

Attached is the Log file.

Thank you so much!

Terence

Your problem is:

2016-05-18T11:09:48.300+08:00 warning vmware-converter-agent[02332] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] ERROR: [Mntapi_GetFirstBootDisk] more that *one* active volume found. Current active disk #0, another active disk #1

Go to diskmgmt.msc or diskpart.exe and remove active flag from second disk/partition 1

Also keep in mind that mount point C:\backup\Ext\ is not copied.

I just removed the second active disk and "reconfigured machine" using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and it works!

Thank you so much POCEH.

By the way, can I check with you that after conversion (P2V), the license of MS Windows Server 2003 Standard required to be activated.

Do I need to buy a new Win2k3 Standard license or I can just activate it?

Sorry If this is not related to the topic, else I will create a new topic for it.

Thanks!

Terence

VMWare vCenter Converter uses wrong VM

I have a small ESXI installation with only a few VMs.  These are mostly OracleLinux 6 x64 systems.

I have built a new ESXI on better hardware, and am beginning to migrate some machines to the new system.  This has gone pretty well, but for some VMs, I get the error: "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine."

Looking into the logs, it appears that, although I have chosen (for example) hcm92-pristine as the VM to copy, the converter complains that it cannot lock a disk from a completely different (hcm92ssd) VM.  Both of these VMs are valid, and both can be running at the same time.  I do not see anything in the .VMX of either one that is out of place; nothing "points to" another system's objects.  In fact, the examples (hcm92-pristine and hcm92ssd) are on different filesystems, with hcm92-pristine being on /vmfs/volumes/RaidDS and hcm92ssd being on /vmfs/volumes/datastore1.

This is VMware vCenter Converter Standalone client Version 5.5.3 build-2183569.

When I exported logs, I received the error: "The diagnostic package cannot be retrieved from the VMware vCenter Converter standalone server.  Error: Could not generate VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Server diagnostic file.  But then a file is generated.  I have attached that file.  I've also attached vmware-converter-server-20.log.gz file from C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs.  This shows the result of being unable to lock hcm92ssd although I chose the hcm92-pristine VM.  (I don't see evidence of what I chose, however.)

When machine is converted most of its hardware is changed due to this Microsoft require re-activation of Windows, if re-activation complete, IMO it's not need to buy new licence.

Could you try the conversion(s) with latest Converter.6.1.1

Thanks for the suggestion, but no joy.  See log, attached.  I've also attached the .vmx for hcm92-pristine.

Is it possible to try to convert running VM? Because this is not possible, only powered off VM could be converted (the suspended VM also can't be converted).

Thanks, POCEH.

The idea behind this pristine image, is that it will not have gone through the first-boot process (which cannot be redone once completed).  Until that first-boot process is completed, IP is not up, so running clone cannot be done in current state.

In the interest of answering the question, I will clone this instance, run the clone through the first boot, and make a try with the result.  But it will be necessary at some point to get this pristine image to the remote server.  Sneaker net will work, I suppose, but I'd prefer to avoid it.  (And I believe we should be able to achieve what I'm trying to do; certainly the tool should not randomly choose servers in spite of user selection!)

The VM has never been suspended.   All devices are Independent/persistent.

I'll get back to you with the result later today.  In the meantime, I'd appreciate if you'd share why you think it would be better to convert the running system.

You can use snapshot of VM: get one at install state, and when you discard current changes (go to initial snapshot) the VM will be in pristine state. Meanwhile you can convert the VM to another location having in mind that Converter collapse all snapshots.

I'll not advocate for live Linux migration because its file systems are transferred with tar/untar and there is no mechanism to transfer changes happens while the files are copied and they are lost.

I'm confused about random server selection, this could happens in clustered environment only.

Update: just to be clear about powered on/powered off migrations:

You can not transfer powered on or suspended VM via coping VMX and VMDK file (converting) through selecting managed source and choosing this VM.

If the machine could not be powered off, then the only choice is to perform live migration i.e. treating source machine as physical machine providing the IP and credentials.

You should consult with User's Manual where these topics are given in details.

It occurred with me, but I realized that VMware Workstation, installed in my laptop, uses this same port. So, I opened the Windows Services and stopped all VMware Workstation services. After I was able to install the vCenter Converter without problem.

The simple answer is no. Converter recognize only devices starting with /dev/sdX.

Vmware converter not converting

Hi All,

I exported a SBS 2011 server into Vmware Workstation (had 2 partitions one physical drive), now i have the VMDK hosted and booting of course, i add a physical drive as a partition to be viewed in the Virtual Machine as it has all the Data shares,

Now i am wanting to convert the virtual machine again with the "data" physical drive to be included in my VM. When i run the converter within the VM, it completed and says doing Block copy of the "Data" drive, But is never there in my new converted VM. Why is that?

I am not wanting my VM to load external drives and want to move the VM onto Raid 5 of 4 TB sized disks.

What could be the issue?

Regards in advance

Hi

I am not sure what you mean by 'run converter within the VM'. Does it mean the VM is powered on and Converter installed in it?

Please attach the log bundle from the conversion.

Regards,

Plamen

Using the Proxy Mode worked for me as well. No messing around with DNS, etc.

Thank you!
