Re: vcenter converter standalone 5.1 download

I am experiencing the same problem.

When using version 6.x it hangs on the "retrieving source.."information.

Since we are using vCenter and vSphere 5.1, I tried to download that version of converter but I cannot download it (VMWare internet page errors and/or not egible).

Windows error 18 is ERROR_NO_MORE_FILES. However it is not certain this is Windows error neither it is clear what has caused it. Pls upload the log bundle for further examination.

V2V Conversion and E1000 NIC

Hi,

We are moving host from one vSphere vCenter to another by doing v2v conversions. However now we have identified an issue.

This is based on our initial checks, this might be incomplete or not accurate.

However what we have seen, after migrating a few VMs is that VXNET 3 adapters stick after moving them to the new vCenter (Windows Server 2003 and 2008 R2 VMs), i.e.. the IP address config stays the same.

E1000 adapters are however identified as new ones, meaning the old one will be hidden and the new one will loose all IP config data.

Does anyone know if this is expected behaviour?

VMWare converter is the latest.

All hosts runs VMWare 5.5 (U2)

vSphere is not on the same release on both sides

VMWare tools might have inconsistency (as its difficult to update VMWare tools on critical VMs)

yes if someone can provide 5.1 will be good.

To workaround, i setup nested esxi5.0 and use converter 5.0. it works. just completed converstion and bootup.

Hi

The wizard gives you the possibility to explicitly set the NIC controller type. The 'auto' option sets a default type based on the GOS type, which in your case is E1000.

Could you provide log bundle with Converter crash?

Yes, the hardware is upgraded during the conversion. I have not found a way in the converter to avoid that. Could very well be the reason. It there a way in converter to avoid upgrades or when the VM starts? As far as I understand downgrade is not the easiest task.

A file I/O error occured while accsessing ''.

Good morning,

Since 2 weeks I'm trying now to do a P2V from a Windows 2003 R2 server to a ESXi 5.5.0 (free license) but I always get the error as metioned in the subject. I'm useing The Stanalone converter 6.0.

What I have tried:

- convert whole machine

- convert singe hdd from the machine (different ones, 3 different disks)

- reinstall Converter and Agent on physical machine

- tried to install Converter on a different machine

The Windows machine is running without any issues. End of October I have done this exercise suessfully with the same machine in a different environment for backup reasons. Then the machine was moved to a new datacenter where I want to virtualize it now. The VMWare host and the physical server are on different networks (router between).

I hope anyone can help me.

Thank you

Andreas

Could you upload log bundle to check where the I/O error occurs - on the source or on the target.

In case the error is in source - you should run 'chkdsk /R' on volume(s); otherwise you should run appropriate procedure on ESX.

Now I need to create a clone of this machine but I need to install it as VMWare. Can you help me?? I never done something like that before.

Thank you all.

An update - I have converted a VM, but did not upgrade hardware version (keept it at 9). That did not help, the E1000 adapters where placed on a different position in the PCI bus and showed up as new devices on the server.

The network is always updated, at least as MAC, during conversion.

Just run the Converter somewhere and put the IP of live Linux, then ESX/VC as target, especially if the HyperV is version 2. For HyperV version 1 you can convert the VM while it is powered off, just select HyperV server and go ahead.

Great!! And very quick! Now just a couple of question:

1) Can I save an image of any format and give it to the customer for the install process?? I can't install the converted virtual machine directly on the customer server.

2) I downloaded and Install VMWare vCenter Standalone Converter 6.0.0 and on convert virtual machine -> Select source type I see:

     -Powered -on machine

     -VMWare infrastucture virtual machine

-VMWare workstation or VMWare other virtual machine

-Backup Image or third party virtual machine

     -HyperV server

I premise that if I select "Powered-on machine" and put the IP address, usename and password the VMWare converter connects to my vm and show all details. Then I would like to know if I can create this image and what should I select to d this.

Thanks a lot guys.

You can convert machine to VM in ESX/VC environment and then export new VM as OVF/OVA which are deployable in another ESX/VC.

Sorry guys I don't know who is EXSI OVF OVA ora something like this. I never work with VM, this time I made a (long) nominatim setup on a HyperV test virtual machine and, to save time and don't repeat the whole set up of nominatim db, I just wanna now if I can create a CLONE IMAGE (like .iso or .jar or .war) of my HyperV Virtual Machine and then install it in a VMWare (tools 8389) and how do this.

Thanks

Giacomo

The mac address should have no impact, or do you have any other information to share?
