Trying to convert a Dell physical server ( 2012 server ) to a VM using version 6 converter and it gets to 98% and fails with FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

It does not delete the VM after failing, attached is the export bundle.

Okay i found the logs you are looking for its under C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs.  There is no all user Profile directory on either computer.  But the logs are attached.

1) Yes

2) Yes

3) Yes, I can ssh from the ESXi host to the target machine and logon as root

4) all of the ip addresses are in the same subnet 192.168.140/24 (source machine .12, ESXi Host .14, and helper machine .16, standalone converter running on .239)

Source machine has an active listener on port 443 for it's normal operation (don't know if that's important, but thought I'd include the information).

Exported the logs, it looks like it exports every log from every time I've tried to do the conversion. I don't see anything on how to delete the logs from previous jobs. The last run of the job is #11 today 11/3 starting at  2:58:40 PM and ended in failure at 5:09:13 PM. I'm attaching the zip file from the export logs with all the logs, as I don't want to delete something that might be useful. I've also included a screen snapshot of the converter window after the failure just incase.

Where I can found old converter to download ?

Hi,

I need to download oldiest converter standalone images, but on the website are only available 5.5.3 or 6.0 release.

Does anyone know where to download 4.x or 5.x version ?

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Davide

Hmm, in this case I don't know what is going wrong.

Look at that KB in order to be able to log in the helper after the conversion fails (actually you can log after it boots, no need to wait for the whole timeout): http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1036746

After you log in, try ssh to the source machine, inspect the network configuration, try ping etc.

BTW the helper log is  /var/log/vmware-converter/vmware-converter-helper.log

The error happens during reconfig phase:

2015-11-03T14:24:55.049-05:00 error vmware-converter-agent[10272] [Originator@6876 sub=task-6] [BaseDiskSetComputer::AnalyzeErrorAndThrow] Error occurred when opening disk set, MNTAPI_ERROR = 176 MNTAPI errorType = 0, errorCode = 11

and error 11 means: "An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format." and probably this error is about registry hive format.

You can try to "configure" only new VM with Converter

So far so good

Now get the agent log files from remote machine in similar location.

From latest worker log: I can't see successful installation of agent.

Converted running Windows 2008 r2 Foundation VM won't boot in ESXi 6.0

Hi,

my problem is to start a converted Windows 2008 r2 Foundation Server in ESXi 6.0

The process of making a VM from the running Windows System works without errors.

Starting the VM works without errors

But when i open a remote console, the console windows remains black. No error, no event information.

I can't find any hint in documentation of this behavior.

I'm using Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone Version: 6.0.0 build-2716716

What you mean with 'remote console' exactly? Is it mstsc.exe, remote console from c# client or some WEB based console?

How you see that VM runs properly, is it possible to stuck in BIOS?...

or perhaps the ESX host is asking you something before starting the VM?

i use the funktion "start remote console" in vSphere Web Client.

The browser opens a new window and this windows stays black.

That's what happens.

Edit machine setting, set to enter in BIOS after start up and boot the VM, if you can't see to BIOS screen, then the problem is probably in ESX...

If you see the BIOS screen, try to exit BIOS and invoke boot menu (ESC) to see how OS is loaded.

Seems an ESX problem then... you should check the ESX forum(s) about not starting GOS, or similar, in VMs.

But as first and easy solution - try to reboot ESX if it not possible - get the ESX logs and send in proper forum/thread.

Ended up using bcdedit to fix this. Boot and default were set to C:. The boot drive on the VM was showing as F:. Changed bcdedit to F: for boot, default and opdefault and now it boots fine.

Anyone succesfull with 6.0.0

I have been working all day on a single machine standard and clean MS Windows 7 64bit enterprise.

This OS is not uncommon but spells a world of trouble for VMWare Converter standalone 6.0.0.

To the point that makes me wonder if this production software. I'm just posting in the many many error messages I have seen throughout the day.

I managed to find workarounds for most of the issues untill I hit

FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi20-shared-C37ABC700000F015000000000C00

This turns out to be a show stopper. There is no way of fixing this.

Which made me wonder. What OS is VMWare Converter supposed to support? It is not MS WIndows 7 for sure.

Is this maybe only for server OS software? Not desktop OS.
