Yes it is possible and done all the time but remember it can take a while depending on WAN bandwidth and amount of data you are copying. Make sure the appropriate ports are opened on the firewall.

To convert Vista+ machine you should use administrator account or run Converter UI 'as administrator'. Otherwise you can turn off UAC and use any local administrator user. HTHBTW in your log bundle...

This is not an option in this case as the old VM would be the clone prior to conversion,The vm with the snapshot would be the production vm.The reason for using the clone to convert is the time factor....
