VMware Workstation convert physical machine - proxy mode

Hi,

I'm trying to use VMware workstation with convert physical machine and I'd like to know if there is someway I can use the proxy mode as I don't want to use the file share mode as I've got port restrictions.

Does anyone know how to do that for proxy mode?

Regards,

Dave.

I've just changed the target to VMware workstation instead of ESXi or Vcenter and I lose the proxy mode option.

What I'm after is doing proxy mode to VMware workstation not ESXi or vcenter

ESXi and vCenter are "managed", products like Workstation are not.

Need to shrink disk

Hello,

I have a Linux VM running on vSphere 5.5. About a year ago, I expanded the disk to 2TB, from 1TB. The problem is, I am now running out of backup space. The VM is actually only using about 300GB on disk, but Backup Exec isn't 'smart' enough to 'see' that, and a full backup takes up a full 2TB - must be a lot of whitespace. I have found a few articles online about using the VMware Converter (Shrink a VMDK using VMware Converter). I downloaded it, created a new VM as the destination, but when I get to the step where you select, "Select volumes to copy," I don't have it - see attached screenshot.

Bottom line is I need this disk to be 500GB thick - what is the best way to do this?

Right but, like I said, it appears to me the only option that allows you to change the size of the destination is, "Select volumes to copy." If you look at my screenshot, you will see I do not have that option.

OK, so let's go instead to page 30:

Certain limitations are applicable when you convert Linux virtual machine sources.

  • Only disk-based cloning is supported for Linux guest operating systems.

In other words, that process you tried to follow only applies to Windows.

You could give your VM another smaller disk and copy your data over within the guest, then delete the current disk once you're done.

Hi,

Are you saying then essentially it's not something that can be done putting the conversion to VMware workstation in proxy mode?

Dave.

That's because you attempt a V2V conversion (powered off source). Try a P2V with the source powered on and you will be able to shrink the volume (P2V is volume based).

Yes, that's correct. Proxy mode can be used only for Windows P2V conversions to managed destinations, i.e. ESXi or vCenter Server.

Use the Converter option to import a running system - then the specs of the HyperVM should not matter.

Hello

This is probably related to permissions of the user that logs in Hyper-V.

Find the converter agent log on the Hyper-V machine and attach it here, there ought to be some more info in it.

Vmware vCenter Converter Standalone clones wrong disk

Hi All,

can somebody help me in solving the below issue...

I created a clone from a machine on ESXi with copying the files and changing the name... This works and I have a fully indepedently running clone...

I now try to move to a new ESXi server with vCenter Converter Standalone...

The Converter detectes the Clone, but if i start the Migration Job, it copies the original disk file, not the cloned one...

Any idea how to prevent this?

Best regards,

Stephan
