Hello! I am attempting to use vmware converter, but am receive the below error after it gets to around 75%. I've tried deselecting the 2nd Partition, but that didn't work. Let me know if there is more information that would assist in troubleshooting. Thank you!

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'File-level volume clone error failed with sourcevolume id \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[D3-E8-C3-55-00-00-F0-15-00-00-00-00] and target volume id 3-8.3,550000057100000000. Error code: 112'

Thank you for the quick reply!

My source was larger than the destination, and even after telling it to use only 100GB, I was still getting the error.

I reduced the size of the volume itself, and then it worked perfectly.

I will get the log file next time it happens. Anyhow it is clear that this happens mostly with 3.10.0-957.5.1 kernel.

VMware Converter Standalone comments grub.cfg lines out wrongly

2019-03-04T11:39:09.840Z info vmware-converter-helper[F2EB3B70] [Originator@6876 sub=task-1] KeepOneBootEntry: Commented out line: : # (removed by Converter) menuentry....

As noted in the above quote from the helper log file, Converter comments out lines from grub.cfg like this:

: # (removed by Converter)

while the correct way would be:

# (removed by Converter)

This mistake (an extra colon in the beginning of the line) causes the first boot to display unnecessary warnings and increases the need to remove old kernels from the source to reduce the warnings in the target.

Hi, attached is the dracut part of the helper log file. The dracut process will run indefinitely and has to be killed manually. The rest of the conversion needs to be done manually. Regards, -Tom

Hi,

The snippet of the log files attached is only about 1 min long, there is nothing suggesting running indefinitely in it. There are also no errors. If you have concerns about posting the whole log bundle in public, you can send me an email (I'll send you my address in a PM).

This is an interesting issue, I haven't seen that before.

Plamen

Hi,

The 'mistake' has been done on purpose. There are other cases when the destination VM is unable to boot w/o the colon (GRUB's bash treats if/else statements w/o command after 'if' as syntax error). The current situation is the lesser evil. We will think of a better solution for future releases.

Plamen

Hi,

I saw the log - it is not much different than the posted snipped - i.e. terminates abruptly a minute and a half after logging the dracut command.

I've tried to reproduce the issue by installing a fresh CentOS 7.6. It converted just fine. Before that I ran dracut manually - no problems, it finished in a few minutes (2 or 3, didn't measure). BTW Converter has a timeout of 1h for this command.

My guess is you have just been impatient and killed reconfiguration too early.

HTH,

Plamen

Hi,

Thanks for your efforts. As stated the log is from a session where I manually killed the Dracut process. Without manual intervention the Converter fails with generic timeout.

The timeout has happened without exception with our servers that run the 3.10.0-957.5.1 kernel, although I tend to kill dracut now manually after waiting for 10 minutes or so (after maybe five times waiting for the 30min/1h timeout in the past).

However all these servers have been updated from previous versions of CentOS/RHEL. Perhaps there is something left from previous versions that intervenes current one and creates problems for Dracut. A library perhaps... Manually the same dracut command works fine with the converted machine's disks when booted from a recent CentOS/RHEL DVD rescue chroot.

If you are interested to investigate further, you could try to install 7.5 and then update it to 7.6 and try to convert that.

-Tom

Thank you Plamen, I will try the method you suggested however do you happen to know why vmware converter does not support md raid disks? Any reason why? Regards, Saad

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone installation Error 1935

I've been trying to install VMware Converter on Windows Server 2008 R2 64Bit OS. I keep getting the following error during installation.

"Error 1935: An error occurred during the installation of assembly component. {9DA4DC8A-9731-3F0E-8BD5-FC17CA6848AD}.

HRESULT: 0x80070BC9."

Has anyone seen this error before? know how to fix? I've found some stuff online but I am not sure it is safe to try the things I've found.

Strange but:

0x80070BC9 - ERROR_FAIL_REBOOT_REQUIRED

net helpmsg 1935 - The computer you are signing into is protected by an authentication firewall. The specified account is not allowed to authenticate to the computer.

Try to reboot machine and then installation.

Thanks! I wanted rebooting to be my last resort. Works now. Thanks.

IIRC some additional logic needed to be added in order to parse and map volumes to partitions in case of RAID. Somehow this didn't seem high enough priority.

Chiming in on this thread, was anyone able to find a solution to this issue? I'm seeing the same thing and this seems to be the only thread with the error.
