They requested the hostd logs with this argument

I didn't know what log options to select but the ones I did select created a file that was 45MB.

What logs do they want? When I do the Export System Logs I have several options. Do they only want the Network choice selected?

I have System, Storage, VirtualMachines, Userworld, Configuration, Logs, hostProfiles, FileSystem, ActiveDirectory, CIM, Hardware, Installer, Network, IntegrityChecks, Testing, CrashDumps, PerformanceSnapshot

I created the logs and network option which was 14MB

Thanks for the logs. However it seems they are from a different time (the errors in converter logs are from 2016-11-09, the ESX logs are from 2016-11-10)

I've filed a bug to the NFC team, they will be looking at it.

In the meanwhile I suggest you make another conversion attempt, targeting ESX 6.0 this time, and collect both converter and ESX logs from that conversion.

Then contact VMware technical support in order to further this investigation. Hand them these logs, mention our discussion and the bug number logged - 1764007.

To be honest I also don't know what boxes to check and what to uncheck. The important thing is the vpxa log and it was included in your bundle.

Edit: In case you do the conversion to an ESXi host that is not managed by a vCenter Server (though this is unlikely), the interesting logs would be the hostd ones.

I am attaching the log from the converter for that time.

I currently have my ESXi 6 server down because I am replacing some hardware. If you want it I can do in on Monday.

I have my ESXi 6.0 server back up. Do you still want me to try the import on that server?

I try to go in rescue mode for do an grub2-mkconfig.
I try also to install open-vm-tools and to add nomodeset to the boot line.

If you have some idea or tips for have more verbose thank you,

I had the same issue on Converter Standalore 6.1.1 while trying to migrate a CentOS server and found the problem to have been caused by iptables rules inside the source server. After disabling the iptables rules I was able to migrate it smoothly.

We ran into this same problem attempting to P2V 2012 and 2012 R2 servers. The account I was using had local admin, domain admin, enterprise admin, administrators group privileges with UAC disabled and still I was getting the "Permission to perform this operation was denied" error with "Must be administrator to access physical computer" in the log.

Finally I found a work around. On the machine I was converting I changed the Local Security Policy setting for "User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode" to Disabled. I was then able to P2V the server. After the P2V I changed the setting back.

Another work around I had was to simply use the local "Administrator" account or run the converter from the server I'm P2Ving.

Unable to Query Live Server - Linux

I am using the latest version of converter (6.1.1). The host machine is a cPanel box running CentOS 7.

A brief overview of the logs shows that it appears to be unable to determine if the system is 32 or 64 bit, which is weird to me.

Root has the right shell, and can login via the method I am using (password). TMP is also writable and I've run the program as Administrator.

From the log:

2016-11-26T23:23:49.166-05:00 error vmware-converter-worker[14292] [Originator@6876 sub=Default] [Converter Agent SysinfoQuery] while trying to execute "E:\Programs\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\plink.exe -noprompt -stdin-pass-and-key <ConverterPrivateKeyEnd> -P 22 -thumbprint <emptyThumbprint> root@144.217.65.90 uname -m" received error code (1) with result: FATAL ERROR: Server unexpectedly closed network connection

Probably there is an issue communicating with the source, e.g. firewall, disabled remote root login, or something similar. As a suggestion - try ssh-ing to the source machine from the converter machine (e.g. using putty). Retry the conversion after that succeeds.

As per my original post I already tried everything in the FAQ. That was one of those things.

Firewall is fully disabled. I can SSH with that account.

Hello,

Be aware that Converter doesn't work with Amazon VMs. The main issue is reconfiguration. AWS uses different virtual hardware than VMware, like network and SCSI modules. E.g. for a VM to work in ESX it needs LSI Logic, LSI Logic SAS, or VMware PVSCSI. IIRC Amazon VMs' kernels have SCSI_MPT2SAS and/or SCSI_MPT3SAS in their config but don't have FUSION_SAS. Similarly for network you would need E1000, E1000E, or VMXNET. AWS has something newer again, don't remember what.

If you want to go the thorny path of manual reconfiguration:

  - rebuilding the initrd image may be enough, but perhaps replacing the kernel might be needed.

  - there are also evbug.ko module and cloud-init that interfere with booting in ESX, you should disable them.

  - don't forget to install GRUB anew on the destination VM.

Plamen

I understand. However the issue is clearly with SSH communication. You may try checking the sshd config - perhaps it has some requirements plink (which is rather old) can't meet. E.g. there once was an issue with SHA2 HMAC (though that was not about plink, something similar could be expected)

VMWare Standalone Converter P2V Windows host with multiple disks

$

Hi,

Using VMware Standalone Converter in an effort to clone some physical machines.  The physical machines I wish to clone are running Windows XP (don't ask! ) and have two physical hard drives:

I want the destination VM's to have the identical two hard drives but cannot figure out how to configure the settings.  From the way it looks both physical disks on the source machine will be converted to a single virtual disk on the destination VM, or am I misunderstanding?

Also, as you can see in the screen shot above, I am receiving a warning in the "Advanced options" section referring to customizing the guest OS - the warning message at the top of the tool reads "Warning: Unable to locate the required Sysprep files. Upload them under 'C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\sysprep\xp' on the Converter Server machine. See 'Help' for more details."

If I run sysprep on the source machine and then upload the resulting file will that then create the two virtual disks corresponding to the two physical disks on the source machine?

If not, is there another tool or method I can use to P2V the source computers?

Thanks!!!

Do you have multiple datastore on your host?

If yes then change destination of second partition to another datastore which will be a separate disk. You can move that disk later if you need.

OR otherwise

Click on advanced next to "Select Volume to copy" and click add disk on right side lower corner (I think)

Do you have any update on this issue?

Thank you Gotzu!  I never noticed that "Add disk" button.  Also, I will try to figure out how to change the destination of the second disk to a different datastore.

Any advice on the sysprep message I am receiving?

Thanks,

Barry
