Virtualize a Windows Server 2003 R2. It's possible?

A salute to the forum, a very simple question. I need to virtualize a Windows Server 2003 R2 and want to know if there are particular problems or incompatibilities. Thank you.

Shouldn't be issues. We still have several hanging out. Just patch as much as possible. I know people will tell you to convert and if you can I agree. However there are applications and instances where you just can't. Just try to mitigate the security issues due to no more patches. Isolate what can talk to it etc.

Hi everyone,

Wierd question, but does anyone have the installer for VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0? If so, could you send me a link for it? Or maybe upload to https://filedump.zitcom.dk and post the link.

Re: Solaris 10 VM Converted goes into a Boot Loop

Followup..

We confirmed that the Solaris images were made using the DD command.

I have had an exchange with Oracle Support as well.

They have pointed me to a solution that would require the physical Solaris server to be imaged using the old "Coldclone" from VMware, that is a bootable ISO image.

If I recall, this was something that was available back in vSphere  4.1 and may not be available.

Convert Physical Machine to VM Image on USB drive

Hi guys and gals,

We have a physical machine that runs some software the company needs 24/7 and we need to make a backup from. It is on dated hardware and if it ever dies we'll need the ability to run it as a VM temporarily until a replacement box arrives and be set up.

I need to make a VMWare ESXi 5.5 compatible image of the physical machine, but save it direct onto a network share or USB drive for storage. I don't see a way of doing this without involving the ESXi server which I've been asked to avoid by superiors. This is essentially a short term disaster recovery scenario for when we need the image, just in case.

Can this be done?

Cheers.

Errors trying to covert VM?

I'm trying to use Vmware Converter Standalone 6.0.0 build 2716716 to convert a VM on an ESX6 server.  it worked perfectly fine in the past.  All of a sudden I'm getting an error at the very end of the conversion:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:

'The session does not have the required permissions'

and in the log highlights:

Error: Unable to clone disk [DATASTORENAME] path/vmname.vmdk on the virtual machine 'Vm Name'.

Any idea?  I did recently install Veeam backup & replication on the same client machine Converter is running on.  Veeam runs fine.

Thanks for any help.

You may run into this error if the Disk is a RAW LUN. You need to detach the RAW LUN before the conversion and add it back after you done.

But I've never added a RAW LUN?  Where did this come from?  Did Veeam do it?   Do I detach this RAW LUN like is covered here:
Switching a raw data mapping between physical and virtual compatibility modes in ESX/ESXi (1006599) | VMware KB ?

And when I do this command:

find /vmfs/volumes/ -type f -name '*.vmdk' -size -1024k -exec grep -l '^createType=.*RawDeviceMap' {} \;

found here: Identifying virtual disks pointing to Raw Device Mappings (RDMs) (1005937) | VMware KB

it shows I have no Raw Devices Mappings?

[root@local:/vmfs/volumes] find /vmfs/volumes/ -type f -name '*.vmdk' -size -1024k -exec grep -l '^createType=.*RawDeviceMap' {} \;

[root@local:/vmfs/volumes]

So this means I my disks are not raw lun's correct?  So it can't be the problem..

Yes, you're right. And if you go to summary of the VM, look for RAW LUN - as show below in the image.

Yes, I only have  one Hard disk 1 = Virtual disk, no Mapped Raw LUN.

But this still leaves me confused, why can't Converter back it up?  Why my error?

Also, best practice for Veeam Backup server SSO is to keep it on a different server.

Hi,

The answer is almost. If it is a Windows machine, you can convert it to hosted (i.e. Workstation/Player/Fusion) which simply requires some data volume as destination (what you want). The 'almost' part is that if you want to run it on ESX, you'll need to convert again because the vmdk formats slightly differ. If it is a Linux box though, then you are out of luck.

Can you upload the log bundle?

It may be something relate to vSphere permissions. The required permissions for conversion are not immediately obvious; you may have a look in the user guide, p.26.

This is correct, cold clone is no more available. However the cold clone mode is still conversion. Conversion involves moving data and reconfiguration. The dd usage Ulli has described is good enough for moving data. If that and the steps for reconfiguration don't help, the boot iso wouldn't either.

disconnect the NIC and proceed to converting , you can add NIC later on,it will not affect your migrated system.
