p2v issues with original vm IP address
Hi I am experiencing issues after I have P2v hyper-v vm's to esxi 5.5 the migration process I am performing is p2v and not v2v as I need the migrate the customers existing iscsi drives mapped to the hyper-v host. Anyway his works fine however when I power up the migrated machine install VMware tools and remove the old nics I get dropped pings using the original IP address. However if I change the ip to something new this ping fine. I had this on all 3 VMS I have converted and all different os levels windows 2012, windows 7 and windows 2008.
I am thinking this is maybe some cached either in the original hyper-v host or on the network. Anyone had this before or know how to resolve.
Many thanks
Re: p2v issues with original vm IP address
If you think it is cached , Go the Device manager --> tools --> view hidden devices
go to network adapter and remove the hidden or removed adapters from the server , (the hidden one will be grayed out , ) once you do that you will have the original NIC attached to the server functional
Re: p2v issues with original vm IP address
Hi thanks for your reply I tried this last night and removed the used nic's which where greyed out as I read this on a VMware KB article. This did not seem to make a difference even with a reboot after.
If there anywhere else where the old IP might be held in the VM? Tonight I am going to test by isolating the network to make sure that its not a switch issue. I will try pinging VM's which are on the same vSwitch.
Re: Converter standalone stalls at 1% due to username/password
I think I have found the cause of this issue.
I have an ESXi server that has multiple vswitches so that I can dual home guests or provision which VLAN the guests land on.
When trying to P2V a linux server onto this host, I encounter this issue.
The P2V process from Linux includes creating a temp guest that boots with the live cloning tools to begin the conversion.
After which, the temp becomes the newly converted virtual guest.
What I've discovered is that at this stage, the temporary cloning OS ends up with the default vSwitch that may not be able to communicate back to the physical server.
You can see this by editing the guest whilst stuck at logon, and look at the network that gets allocated.
My issue now is that there is no 'Converter' option to specify the vswitch network that the cloning tool should use.
There is an option to specify the network for the new guest... once converted but this is not applied at this stage.
Essentially... there is a bug with the conversion process as it should if you an IP Helper config to select a vSwitch/Network.
So... I need to think of how to change the default vswitch.
I'm sure if this helps anyone or me right now but thought I'd share.
Re: p2v issues with original vm IP address
Hi,
Some question to come to the conclusion
1) Are you able to ping gateway after providing the IP address from the virtual machine ?
2) If you are trying to ping the VM with its hostname then to which IP address its showing ?
3) Trying to provide IP address having issue and then run a tracert through command prompt and check where its getting stuck
4) There are chances where you have registered the IP address and hostname in DNS server because of which it might getting clashes between the Old IP and VM name ?
Re: p2v issues with original vm IP address
Austin ,
try clearing the DNS entries, and flush the DNS entries
Make sure no Duplicate entries are not made for the two new VM
Re: p2v issues with original vm IP address
Thanks all - Will try some of these and let you know how I get on tonight. Cheers
Re: Converter standalone stalls at 1% due to username/password
OK... perhaps there are a number of things going on here.
I changed the adapter NIC for the new host to be E1000 and did not connect the second NIC on power up.
By checking the guest propertise, I compare the MAC address to these DHCP scope leases and could test by ping the IP that was release to it.
When it doesn't ping... it's not gonna clone.
The Physical linux server also has 2 NIS and originally I left them both in.
It also appeared to work after having two nics but leaving the second one set to Not connect on boot.
With only one... it works so I'm sure it's getting confused at this stage..
One thing to note... when it does work and connect to the network correctly... and the converter begins to progress... the guest console will continue to displace the prompt to login.
So make sure you check the progress of the converter when testing.
Hope this helps.
Re: Using Converter offline, via WinPE / PXE booting?
As mentioned in my other thread, hot cloning results in NTFS file system corruption and a disk check on first boot of the migrated server that always has to delete a bad attribute record in the $J. So it is not hot cloning NTFS correctly no matter what I do.
Since it appears I cannot do WinPE conversion, I am going to have to do the next step down the rung for offline cold cloning.
File Server: Dell PowerEdge 2900
- Two RAID-5, one OS boot 73g x2, one data drive 300g x4
- Running Server 2008 R2 SP1
Install VMWare Tools on Server 2008, to preinstall VM drivers.
Insert another spare SAS hard drive
- in controller, configure as RAID-0
- in controller, set this as boot drive
Install basic Windows 7 DVD on this drive
Install Standalone Converter on Windows 7
Clone to VMWare ESXi 5.5
In cloned machine
- Delete the Windows 7 VMDK
- Configure migrated VM settings manually
Boot from the original Server 2008 R2 disk, which has not been twiddled by Converter but copied raw to the VMDK.
Re: Using Converter offline, via WinPE / PXE booting?
IMO the NTFS on the source is corrupted and needs repair, try the chkdsk /R and then convert again.
Yet another "Operation timed out" problem
Hello,
I'm trying to run a P2V conversion of a Hyper-V machine. The agent gets installed correctly, then at the "Connecting to source machine" step i receive the following error: "A general system error occurred: Operation timed out".
I'm able to telnet to the source machine on a port 9089. Berow are excerpts from the Converter logs (domain and user info replaced with #####\#####)...
I desperately need to enable this conversion process, so any help will be appreciated.
Some technical info:
- hyper-v 2.0
- guest machine OS: Windows 2008 R2
- vcenter 5.5
- hosts - esxi 5.1
- vcenter converter 5.1.0

Re: Yet another "Operation timed out" problem
Hi,
Have you installed Converter agent in the source machine,
If NOT :- Install it .....
If YES :- Then refused connection could happens if no one listen on specified port... so you can try to re-install agent (uninstall completely --> reboot --> install )on source machine and try to convert it again.
Re: Yet another "Operation timed out" problem
Hello
I want to clarify something (you probably got it right, but just in case). When you convert a powered off Hyper-V VM, the agent should run in the Hyper-V server, when you convert a powered on VM - it should run in the VM itself.
I assume you have the second case. According to the logs the agent has been installed correctly. This means converter has access to the source machine. Perhaps it could not connect to the agent afterwards (the "class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)" message is misleading, the issue is somewhere else). Check whether a firewall (internal in the source or external) does not prevent the connection.
HTH
Plamen
P.S. Attach the whole log if this doesn't help

Re: Using Converter offline, via WinPE / PXE booting?
I see:
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 1 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 1 unused security descriptors.
and:
Cleaning up 14 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 14 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 14 unused security descriptors.
So you could try to convert again.

Re: Using Converter offline, via WinPE / PXE booting?
I got the same result.... Cross-linked files on drive C: but no problems on drive E:
This was found just doing the "lightweight" chkdsk /f
Due to that I'm not going to bother doing a 6-hour long /f /r on the copied VM.
Onward to Windows 7 Extra-disk cold cloning, and if that too fails, then I'm going to have to do the traditional route: build a new server, migrate via robocopy.

P2V Successful but Hyper V Virtual, not so much.
Hello All;
I just P2V the entire environment over the past week and must say YAY except for 1 pain in the rear end! I have a Windows Server 2012 running Hyper-V. I was able to P2V the entire server and now I'm getting the following error:
"Virtual Machine <Name> could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"
Now after hours of googling, I've tried the following:
- Adding "hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" to the VMX file of the virtual machine host
- bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto and restarted with no luck.
Need some insight please to get the 5 Hyper-V virtual servers running.
Thank You
Re: P2V Successful but Hyper V Virtual, not so much.
also ran the following
wmic OS Get DataExecutionPrevention_Available
& DEP is TRUE
