VMware converter states "The source parameters are invalid"

$

I am using version 6.0.0 build 2716716 of the VMware vcenter Converter Standalone client.

I am trying to convert a Storagecraft Shadowprotect (build version v5.2.0.36537) image of a desktop computer backup to a VM for Workstation 11.1. However when I try to load the image into the converter I get the

error "The source parameters are invalid". The images are not bad. I have 10 other computers that run Shadowprotect and I can restore that image to any of those computers using the Shadowprotect

restore. If I try reading any of those images I get the same results. I opened a support ticket with VMware and the tech for the converter support said he had to transfer me to the Vmware Workstation support team. This has nothing to do with the Workstation since the converter program can't even accept the .spf files.The computer this images came from has already been re-purposed so I can't restore it back and do a powered on conversion.

Can someone help me?

Converter 6.0 User's guide (https://www.vmware.com/pdf/convsa_60_guide.pdf), on page 22, supported sources table:

  * StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop, ShadowProtect Server, ShadowProtect Small Business Server (SBS), ShadowProtect IT Edition, versions 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 (.spf).StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop, ShadowProtect Server, ShadowProtect Small Business Server (SBS), ShadowProtect IT Edition, versions 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 (.spf).

Your version is pretty new and is not in this list, that's why you get "parameter is invalid" error.

What you can do is to create an empty destination VM in vCenter (or Workstation - I am not sure what is your case) with enough disk size to accommodate the image, restore it inside the VM using the ShadowProtect software (e. g. boot from a CD) and then after the import is complete, just run Converter "Configure" operation on that VM in order to try to make it bootable in virtual environment and... keep your fingers crossed.

Hello

A few comments:

- The interesting log is the agent's one. It is located on the source machine (same folder path as worker's).

- Have you tried to just reconfigure the destination machine? If not - try it, you may also try with Converter 6.0

- If that doesn't help, you might try the Windows repair functionality. If you mount an Windows installation disk (e.g. on ISO image or perhaps even as physical CD/DVD) on the destination VM and boot from it, there should be some repair option in the wizard. Bug check 0x0000007b means 'inaccessible boot device'; fixing that could render the machine bootable with some luck.

I was able to determine the problem was with the install of VMware converter on the OS.  I ended up uninstalling VMware converter and then searching the registry for all references of VMware, removing those, and also deleting all remaining converter files including everything in %allusersprofile%\vmware.

After a reinstall of VMware converter 6.0 the machine converted without issue.

Hi Plamen,

I have attached again the agent log.

1) I have tried to repair but failed due to the OS does't have the option to repair.

2) i have try to reconfigure the VM but it also failed and give me the error unable to create vstor....

Thanks.

Hi again Zack

It was a mistake to ask for the agent's logs, sorry for that (I thought converter was installed on a separate machine).

On more careful examination, the worker log contains:

2015-05-26T13:57:21.013+08:00 [03896 warning 'Default'] ERROR: Vmount library: Error 1450 while error communicating with the driver

-->

Windows error 1450 means "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

I don't know what this is caused by, there is something unusual on this source machine. You may eventually want to see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19845580/system-error-1450-has-occurred-insufficient-system-resources-exist-to-complete

Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

I am trying to convert a Windows 7 machine with 4GB into a VM using VMware vCenter Converter standalone.

I keep on getting following internal error:

Error vmware-converter-worker[05796] [Originator@6876 sub=Ufa.HTTPService]
Failed to read request; stream: <io_obj p:0x01446f2c, h:-1, <pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>,
<pipe '\\.\pipe\vmware-converter-worker-soap'>>,
error: class Vmacore::TimeoutException(Operation timed out)

I have tried to disable UAC and Turn of firewall and antivirus. I am lost here. Any hints on how to fix this?

I found some info linking this to an issue regarding systems that have the /3GB switch added in the boot.ini file located on the boot drive - but I have no boot.ini on the computer.

TIA, Kind regards S. Dalby

How are you trying to convert ? Remote or on the machine ? Which  version , try to download the latest version of standalone converter

Try to install the converter on the 2008 R2 server on which you have network connectivity to the machine you need to do P2V

Make sure these are checked

  1. disable Windows Simple File Sharing if your source server is running Windows XP.
  2. enable Workstation, Server, TCP/IP Netbios Helper and Volume Shadow Copy (Windows XP/2003, can be set to manual, just not disabled).
  3. Disable any antivirus software running on the source server
  4. Shutdown any applications that are not needed on the server
  5. Run chkdsk and defragment your source server's hard disks
  6. Keep users off the server while cloning. Disable remote desktop and any shares if possible
  7. Required ports are 443 and 902 (source to ESX/VC) and 445 and 139 (converter to source and source to Workstation/Server). These ports need to be opened on both OS firewalls and any network firewalls sitting between your source and destination servers.
  8. Check the permission of the user you are logged in and trying to convert,, i would suggest to go with the domin admin account
  9. TCP/IP and UDP Port Requirements for Conversion and setting this up Ports Used When Converting a Powered On Physical Machine Running Windows

Yet another P2V Conversion failure: unable to submit job: converter.fault.ManagedDiskOpenFault

Hello

I guess title says it all....

Trying to convert a Win7 machine to ESXi vCenter 5.5 - the job never gets to the point of starting as I get an error at submission.

Tried both with converter 5.5.3 and 6.0 to no avail.

There is no (known ?) other connection to vCenter.

Log bundle is enclosed.

Any help / suggestion most welcome !

You have to make sure you have network connectivity on port 902 both from Converter Server machine and the source machine to the destination ESX server (note it is not the vCenter server). If your ESX server is registered in vCenter with hostname, but not with IP address, then both Converter Server machine and the source machine should be able to resolve the ESX server DNS name.

Thanks ! That was indeed my issues (connectivity to the ESX machine) - all ok now.

All I wish is the the converter app could present us with a more helpful message (could not establish network connexion to host xxx on port 903 would be much more helpful !)

Is this currently supported? We run a 5.1 environment at the moment, but need to convert a customer in the future. I'd expect our new environment to be on 6.0.

If not, do you know if there will be issues converting to 5.1?

Yes, it's supported, also you can use Converter 6.0

A File I/o Error Occurred While Accessing Vmware Converter and other critical errors can occur when your Windows operating system becomes corrupted. Opening programs will be slower and response times will lag. When you have multiple applications running, you may experience crashes and freezes. There can be numerous causes of this error including excessive startup entries, registry errors, hardware/RAM decline, fragmented files, unnecessary or redundant program installations and so on.You can repair your os by this tool. http://microsoftsupporthelp.org/a-file-io-error-occurred-while-accessing-vmware-converter/

Hm, just a wild guess, but can you try to connect to Converter Server using IP address instead of connecting to local server? I mean you would still connect to the local server, but through the network interface. If you have installed it locally on the source then you can connect to 127.0.0.1. If you have installed Converter in local mode (default) then you would need to run the installer again, select the Modify option and add the Remote connection feature.

If this doesn't help you can try to install the Converter Server on another machine and point it to the physical source.

host key fingerprint verification failed when converting a linux machine

I am using converter 6.0.0 to convert a physical linux machine to vm. I have getting the following error repeatedly. It always stopped at 3% after 3 minutes

msg = "A general system error occurred: # XYZ.mit.edu SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.3

--> # XYZ.mit.edu SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.3

--> # XYZ.mit.edu SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.3

--> The authenticity of host XYZ.mit.edu can't be established. Host key fingerprint xx:xx:xx:xx:c7:5f:23:34:d7:2c:79:7e:77:92:3e:e6 verification failed.

-->  (return code 1)"

I have spent many hours on this but could not figure it out. I have tried a different physical linux machine, and got the same error. I have no problem logging into the physical machine XYZ.mit.edu outside of the converter. The converter contains plink program under C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone, and I can run plink to the physical server XYZ.mit.edu by store the fingerprint in cache and it connects fine.

I have no idea where the SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.3 in the error message comes from. The physical server XYZ.mit.edu runs OpenSSH_5.3p1. Here is the entry of /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the physical server

# cat sshd_config | grep -v \#

Anyone knows how to work around this error?

Thanks very much!

Hello

it is possible the helper VM can't resolve XYZ.mit.edu. You can try a ping from another VM in the same VM network to verify that.

If that's the case, use the IP address of the source machine.

Hi Plamen,

You are correct. The network of the helper VM was not configured properly. After I changed the network configuration, it passed the error.

Thank you so much!
