I would interest in the problem. But I leave the server without LVM because of his short live. It will be replaced by a new one in some month.

Thanks for your time and when you have the solution of the problem above let me know.

Do not attempt to P2V (you cannot migrate as Hyper-V and VMware use different virtual disks). it is easier by far to just create a new machine on your VMware hosts and run DCPromo,

VMWare Converter Standalone and static helper VM Mac address

$

Dear community,

First, thank you all for this wonderful community, it helped me a lot in the past answering my questions by browsing the forums!

I got the following problem. I want to convert a physical linux machine using the Converter Standalone 5.1.

Therefore I am trying to set up a static IP address for my helper VM machine but because I am within a enterprise network (which does not allow DHCP) I have the following problem.

In our company IP addresses are bound to MAC addresses, I already registered a new IP address with a VMWAre friendly (00:50:56:xx) Mac address in our IT department.

But when I use this IP address in the static helper VM setting in the Converter Standalone I am missing the information to enter a Mac address.

It seems to me that the Converter is trying to create this helper VM with a random Mac address but and I don't have control over that so that the logfile says "connect failed to <IP address>".

I am pretty sure that if I could assign this mac address to the helper vm the converter could access this machine in our network.

Is there a hidden option or some trick to define a mac address for the helper VM?

Thanks in advance for your help

vCenter Converter to import existing VM into ESXi "Certificate Warnings"

I recently setup a new ESXi host and I am trying to import a backup of a working domain controller into the VMware Server appliance but while running the converter I get these certificate errors

  • a certificate in the hosts chain does not have a valid signature
  • a certificate in the hosts chain is based on an untrusted root
  • other certificate trust error

I have the option to "Ignore" but choosing that does not help, it keeps giving me those errors. I can also check off "do not displayt security warnings" but that does not get me past this screen either. Can anyone help me out? the version is converter standalone 4.3.0

Hi Plamen,

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

Right now, converter and destination (vCenter) are in the same LAN but the source (Linux VM) is behind a firewall. This case generates the error earlier mentionned.

I installed a converter in the same LAN than the source(Linux VM), so now the vCenter is behind the firewall. In this case, during the conversion wizard, I can't contact vCenter and get this error : fault.NoHostConnection.summary.

VMWare converter standalone fails at 1%.

Hello,

I am having problem converting some machines from one subnet to another. Since I am working in university, here is quite complex network infrastructure. Every time I need a port open, I have to register a call and wait for few days for it to be solved.

I have:

ESXi 5.1 on subnet A

PC which is on subnet A and is able to connect to subnet B through port 80, 445, 9089.

Some servers that are going to be migrated located in subnet B.

Now when I try to set a task with wmware converter standalone installed on PC to clone a physical host(win 2k3) from subnet B I get the failed status with error message: An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'.

I found on this forum similar problem(P2V conversion fails at 1% , "An error occured during the conversion"Unknown exeption"") and rechecked my logs.

2013-08-01T11:11:06.719+02:00 [02020 warning 'Default'] [,0] [NFC ERROR] NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx: Failed to connect to peer. Error: Failed to connect to server 1.2.3.4:902(this is the IP of ESXi server)

2013-08-01T11:11:06.719+02:00 [02020 info 'Default'] [,0] Sysimgbase_DiskLib_OpenWithPassPhrase failed with 'NBD_ERR_NETWORK_CONNECT' (error code:2338)

2013-08-01T11:11:06.719+02:00 [02020 info 'Default'] [,0] Error 2338 opening disk ha-nfcssl://[ESXi_storage] servername/servername.vmdk@1.2.3.4:902!52 14 82 92 62 f1 db ec-a3 c4 4a 72 fd da b5 ac.

the problem is kind of clear to me. Source machine is trying to connect directly to ESXi server and it's storage. But for me to register a "port opening" call for every server I want to convert is a bit inconvenient to say the least and I was wondering is it possible somehow to do migration through PC in A subnet which has access to powered on source machines and ESXi server. And those machines would not need to directly contact the ESXi server?

Thanks for your answers.

BSOD on start up

Alright Guys,

I have been trying to set up a VM Image of an ex colleagues machine before the format and rebuild. I am using the VMWare Converter to create the image and the Oracle VMBox software to run the image.

I have set up multiple VM's previously with no issues. I have now gone through the settings hundreds of times in my head and i cannot spot any issues which is why this is making me want to SCREAM! (we have all been there)

The issues is the machine will not boot in VMBox. It gets to the windows 7 start up page and crashes every time resulting in the dreaded BSOD.

The only reason for it to fail that i can currently think of is the set up of the physical machine that has been imaged. It is set up in a RAID configuration, i believe RAID-0. Is anyone aware if this is going to make a difference? As far as i am aware if it is striping (RAID-0) then surely the converter should simply image it as a single hard drive and there should be no problems?

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated as this one has me stumped!!

Cheers.

Bonjour Perrine,

You mentioned in your previous message that "Converter and source machine are not on the same LAN. The helper is configured to be on the same LAN than the source."

I thought that may be, if converter is in the same LAN too, the problem would not appear anymore. Actually the error occurs in the communication between converter and helper. The idea was, that if they are in the same LAN, the error may disappear.

We have discussed the issue with Ivan (ivivanov) today. The possibility of IP conflict is not ruled out yet. Can you check the static IP you have tried with is not in the DHCP range ? Also, is it possible there is more than one DHCP server in the LAN ? If it is not an IP conflict, no other idea unfortunately.

Since the source is a VM, can you power it off and do a V2V conversion instead ? (It it less functional indeed, you can't unselect or resize volumes, do disk alignment). If this is a possibility, please take into consideration you may need to open port 902 in the firewall.

Regards,

Plamen

Hello,

how do you make an image using converter? Converter does not produce images. If it is an OVF, then you should be using an old version of converter. What converter version did you use?

Is the source powered on or a powered off VM?

You may need to manually select the "LSI Logic SAS" virtual disk controller in the Converter wizard, otherwise it may default to an IDE controller which usually results in an BSOD 7E (inaccessible boot device).

Hello,

You could convert to Workstation format and then convert again the resulting VM to ESX. If you have a machine with enough storage in subnet B, convert to it, then physically move the machine or just the storage to subnet A and convert again. Thus you can bypass the firewall completely.

I have checked through the VM configuration and it is definitely set up as SATA rather than IDE. I manually selected "LSI Logic SAS" in the setup as well!

Thank you for the thoughts, any more would be appreciated.

SATA? Please check the VM's .vmx file to see whether the disk is attached to a SCSI interface and the SCSI controller is set to "lsisas1068".

I have been simply converting a physical powered on machine into a VM, this is what i mean by creating a VM image. I have been using VMWare Converter 5.1 standalone. I have converted multiple machines with exactly the same method as i am using currently with both SATA and IDE controllers. The machine is configured exactly the same as the others in the VM setup wizard. The only difference between the rest of the machines i have been converting and this one is the dual hard drives in a RAID-0 configuration.

Apologies i am talking about the setup in VMBox rather than the actual conversion.

This is the data from the .vmx file

scsi0.present = "TRUE"

scsi0.virtualDev = "lsisas1068"

scsi0:0.present = "TRUE"

As far as i am aware this is correct?

I think we are not talking about the same thing!? What's important is that the correct disk controller is selected in the Converter Wizard. This way the Converter will inject the required drivers into the guest OS.

Once again initially i was talking about the Oracle VMBox configuration so my apologies on that. I am on the same page now. I am almost certain that i selected LSI Logic SAS in the VM but i have now run the converter again and this one i am certain is configured correctly.

Thanks for all your help,

Jordan
