@Graham, thank you for posting the link. Apparently the capability to import a vhd is no longer part of VCSC. If that's the case, I wonder why it outputs such a useless error message rather than saying it cannot import a vhd.
I googled the error message and found some info. Hopefully one of the suggestions will help.
I noticed that the version of vmware player I have is old, so will update it.
