When trying to migrate a Server 2 guest to ESXi4, I kept getting an "unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine" error from Converter 5.0. I found a post saying 4.3 had a fix for this, but it gave the same result. On a whim, I tried Conveter Standalone 4.0.1 and got a different error: "unable to lock disk" or something similar that I can't remember right now. With this different error to go on, I went in and renamed the vmdk.lck file for the guest and was then able to convert (but only with v4.0.1).
The guests where this was a problem were both W2K8 Server instances, but I don't think it would have mattered as I've seen a number of posts regarding the error message that is this thread's title.
5 hours of my life that I can never get back. Did I just stumble upon the only workaround or is there a vmware-prescribed way to deal with this?
